Study Cuba with UTEP

Join us for a 10-day study tour and trip to Havana and Cienfuegos, Cuba. The program includes lectures by experts on Cuban’s economy, media, art and culture, environmental communication and current U.S.-Cuba relations and its literary landscape. In addition, the group will visit academic, environmental and historic sites in La Habana and the province of Cienfuegos, as engage in beach cleanup activities with Cuban students. In Havana, we will stay in a hostel of the prestigious Institute de Periodismo Jose Martí in the Vedado area of La Habana and in private homes in Cienfuegos.

The Cuba Study Abroad takes place during May 19-29, 2019 and include pre-and-post departure sessions by the group leaders, Dr. Irasema Coronado (Political Science), Professor Zita Arocha (Communication).

The main objective of this course is to introduce UTEP students to the complexities of contemporary Cuban culture and society and expose our them to a radically different economic and political model–Cuba is a Communist country–with activities and scheduled programs on the ground in Cuba to provide necessary context and experience.

The Study Abroad Class and Cuba tour will help students develop their communication, leadership, research and critical thinking skills by having them compare/contrast Cuban society, culture, political and economic system with our own society and culture.

More specifically, through study, research and firsthand experience, the course will provide an overview to the political history and politics of Cuba, the longtime role of the U.S. in Cuban political, economic and social affairs and how news media (U.S. and Cuban) has shaped the island’s historical narrative.

To further enhance students’ understanding of Cuba’s current literary and cultural landscape, we will also visit with writers and artists at the Union de Escritores y Periodistas de Cuba.

The rigorous on-the-ground academic program will be augmented by trips to historic sites, museums and Cuban institutions, including a visit to the Cuban Friendship Institute, visits to the Museum of the Revolution, the Tribuna Anti Imperalista (across from the U.S. Embassy on the malecón), the internationally reorganized Graphic Arts studio in Old Havana, as well as sites of Afro-Cuban religious culture.
