FINANCIAL AID



Federal Financial Aid can be applied to classes from a study abroad program that counts towards your declared major or minor.


If you are eligible to receive Financial Aid, you should complete the FAFSA form online. Visit the Office of Student Financial Aidfor specific information about your individual financial aid award package and how funds are dispersed.



UTEP INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION FEE SCHOLARSHIP

UTEP sponsors a scholarship that is funded by student fees. Every UTEP student participating in an approved Study Abroad program is eligible to apply. Award amounts vary depending on program length and cost, number of applicants, for non-faculty led programs as well as faculty led programs, and application quality.

UTEP’s Office of Scholarships also has information about other scholarships available that are not specifically for studying abroad but can be used for your international educational experience. Please visit their website for more information.

National Scholarships

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Program

This scholarship program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education. It enables students who have limited financial means to participate in study abroad opportunities worldwide.


Eligibility:

    • Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. National.
    • Must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of his/her study abroad.
    • Must be applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by the student's accredited institution of higher education in the U.S.
    • Must be studying abroad for at least 28 days in one country. Programs going to more than one country are eligible if the student will be studying in one country for at least 28 consecutive days.
    • Must be studying abroad in any country except Cuba or a country on the U.S. Department of State's current Travel Warning list.

Award Benefits:

Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being approximately $4,000

NSEP – Boren Awards

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to add an important international and language component to their educations.The program focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad.

Boren Scholarships provide American undergraduate students with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation, in exchange for their commitment to seek work in the federal government.

Boren Fellowships supports graduate students pursuing the study of languages, cultures and world regions which are critical to U.S. national security but are less frequently studied by U.S. graduate students, i.e. areas of the world other than Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Boren Scholarships

Eligibility:

    • Must be a U.S. citizen at the time of application.
    • Must be a high school graduate or have earned a GED and have matriculated in an undergraduate degree program in an accredited U.S. institution of higher education.
    • Must be applying to engage in a study abroad experience in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand that meets home institution standards.
    • Must be planning to use the scholarship for study abroad, and the study abroad program ends before you graduate. Boren Scholarships are not for study in the United States.


Boren Fellowship
Eligibility:

    • Must be a U.S. citizen at the time of application.
    • Must be either enrolled in or applying to a graduate degree program at an accredited U.S. college or university located within the United States. To receive the award you must provide evidence of admission and enrollment in such a program. Boren Fellows must remain enrolled in their graduate programs for the duration of the fellowship.


Award Benefits:

Boren Scholarship
Maximum scholarship awards - $10,000 for a semester and $20,000 for a full academic year

Boren Fellowship

Maximum level of support for a combined overseas and domestic program is $30,000 over 24 months

*In exchange for scholarship funding, all Boren Scholars must work in the Federal Government in a position with national security responsibilities.*

Ambassadorial Scholarship

The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people from different countries and geographical areas.

Some Rotary districts may not offer scholarships. Applicants must check with their local club about availability.Interested students must apply for Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships through their local Rotary club.Because timelines vary, only your local club(s) can provide specific information about application deadlines.There are two Rotary Clubs in El Paso—El Paso Vista Hills and East El Paso and can be reached at (915)775-1040.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Forty-five $1,000 grants are awarded each year.

Eligibility:

    • Must have a minimum of 30 semester hours (or equivalent) and no more than 90 semester hours (or equivalent) by the deadline, excluding all AP, credit by exam, etc.
    • Must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. NO rounding-up (meaning a 3.46 GPA does not qualify)
    • Must have at least two semesters left at your home institution after the completion of your study abroad program;
    • Must have applied to or been accepted into an accredited study abroad program before the deadline and provide a letter of acceptance or a letter confirming your application, on official letterhead, as part of your application.

Country Specific Scholarships


Turkey

The Turkish Coalition of America in cooperation with Diversity Abroad are awarding a number of grants per year in the amount of $2,000, $1,000 or $500 for undergraduate and graduate students who have been accepted to a study abroad program in Turkey or Cyprus for a academic year, semester or summer. Applicants must be undergraduate or graduate African-American, Hispanic/Latino or Native-American students who have already applied and been accepted to participate in a study abroad program at a university tin Turkey or Cyprus through an American educational institution or study abroad provider.

Germany

The German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD) offers a wide range of scholarship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students from the United States for study and research in Germany.

Italy

The Lemmermann Foundation offers scholarships in the classical studies and humanities to Master's and Doctoral students. Fields of study include Archaeology, History, History of Art, Italian, Latin, Musicology, Philosophy, and Philology.
Applicants must provide evidence for their need to study and carry out research in Rome. Topic of research must be related to Rome or the Roman culture from the Pre-Roman period to the present day time.

Japan

The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Approximately 60-100 scholarships are awarded annually to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year.

ISEP

Annette Kade Scholarship for Study in Austria, France, Germany and Switzerland
ISEP sponsors a student scholarship funded through The New York Comminity Trust- Annette Kade Fund.These grants will be awarded to U.S. ISEP semester exchange and academic year participants in order to encourage students with a genuine interest in studying abroad, who do not have sufficient financial resources to apply for a placement in Austria, France, Germany and Switzerland.The target audience of this scholarship is any student wishing to study at one of the German or French language programs at an ISEP member institution.The award criteria for the scholarship includes, academic background, desire to improve language ability and genuine financial need.

Eligibility:

    • Must be a U.S. student nominated to participate in an ISEP program in France, Germany, Austria or Switzerland.
    • Must demonstrate financial need

Academic Programs International

API awards approximately $250,000 in scholarships annually ranging from $250 -$1,000 per student!You must have applied and been accepted to an API program to be eligible to apply.

AIFS

Each year, more than $600,000 in scholarships will be awarded to summer and semester students who submit application materials to demonstrating high academic achievement. Scholarships are available for both summer and semester AIFS programs only.
